Multipurpose Newcomen Engine is a machine used to construct various parts. Adding one of five different machine attachments changes the function of the tool. It requires Full Bucket of Water, Basket of Charcoal, and a source of fire to run. The machine base plus all of its components requires 11 Iron Ore to craft.
Total Raw Materials Required[ | ]
- 4 Stone Blocks
- 2 Small Curved Branch
- 5 Straight Branch
- 11 Iron Ore
- 3 Raw Rubber Tire
- 2 Rope
- 1 Yew Shaft
- 1 Flat Rock
- Kindling, Bucket of Water, and fire for fuel.
Smithing Breakdown[ | ]
This section gives the smithing components of the recipe in order of crafting from scratch, assuming you already have a Forge, Smithing Hammer, File, Wooden Tongs, Flat Rock etc.
- Turn 11 Iron Ore into Wrought Iron
- Turn 4 Wrought Iron into:
- Turn the remaining 7 Wrought Iron into 7 Steel Ingots and make:
- 2 Steel Blades (You may want to wait until the last moment to make these, so they are not taken.)
- Assemble the Newcomen Hammer and use 4 Hot Steel Ingots in Wooden Tongs to make:
- You can then assemble the mechanisms for the Roller, Bore and Lathe.
- Use the last steel ingot for the Drill Bit (which requires use of the Roller and Lathe).
Crafting[ | ]
Engine[ | ]
Hit some stakes with a round stone to get Pit Stakes, then use a Mallet to turn them into Newcomen Tower Stakes. Place four Stone Blocks, then a Pump Beam Kit. Add a Newcomen Atmospheric Core, a rope, and a Yew Shaft
Roller Mechanism[ | ]
To make the Roller Mechanism, the Newcomen Hammer must first be used to make two Large Pulleys. Adding these to a Long Straight Shaft will complete the part.
Bore Mechanism[ | ]
To make the Bore Mechanism, the Newcomen Hammer must first be used to make one Small Pulley and one Large Pulley. Combine these with a Long Straight Shaft. Use a Raw Rubber Tire on the disconnected mechanism to get a Raw Rubber Belt. Use the raw belt on a Hot Adobe Oven to vulcanize it, then add it to the Pulley Drive Mechanism. Adding a Steel Blade will complete it. (The Steel Blade can be removed again to swap for a lathe mechanism)
Lathe Mechanism[ | ]
The Lathe Mechanism is a variation that uses the same Pulley Drive Mechanism as the Bore part. A Steel Blade is attached to a Tied Short Shaft to get the Lathe Head, which can then be added to the pulley drive. Note: The Bore blade can be removed and the same pulley drive re-used for the lathe mechanism and vice versa. It is not necessary to construct two pulley drive mechanisms.
Drill Mechanism[ | ]
The Drill Mechanism is a variation that uses the same Pulley Drive Mechanism as the Bore and Lathe part. Use the Newcomen Roller to make a Thin Steel Rod, then use the Newcomen Lathe to make a Drill Bit. The Drill Bit can then be added to the pulley drive. Note: The Bore blade and Lathe head can be removed and the same pulley drive re-used for the drill mechanism and vice versa. It is not necessary to construct more than one pulley drive mechanism.
Using[ | ]
Either a Crude Piston on Flat Rock, Roller Mechanism, Bore Mechanism or Drill Mechanism can be added to change the function of the machine. The part can easily be removed again in order to switch the function.
Newcomen Hammer[ | ]
To get a Newcomen Hammer, add a Crude Piston on Flat Rock. To use, add a Full Bucket of Water and Basket of Charcoal, then light the fuel with a Firebrand. It can then be used for 20 seconds.
Fire a Steel Ingot in a Firing Forge using Wooden Tongs, then use it on the Newcomen hammer. Each time the hot metal is used on the hammer, it will flatten further into different parts. Use a Copper Ingot on the firing hammer to get Copper Foil (forge not necessary).

Newcomen Roller[ | ]
To get a Newcomen Roller, add a Roller Mechanism (This requires use of the Newcomen Hammer to make). To use, add a Full Bucket of Water and Basket of Charcoal, then light the fuel with a Firebrand. It can then be used for 20 seconds.
- Use Hot Steel Ingot in Wooden Tongs to get Steel Rod (requires Firing Forge)
- Use Hot Rod in Wooden Tongs to get Thin Steel Rod (requires Firing Forge)
- Use Hot Wrought Iron in Wooden Tongs to get Iron Rod (requires Firing Forge)
- Use a Steel Pipe to get Blowpipe
- Use a Copper Ingot to get Copper Rod
- Use a Warm Zinc Ingot in Wooden Tongs to get Zinc Rod (requires Hot Coals)

Newcomen Bore[ | ]
To get a Newcomen Bore, add a Bore Mechanism (This requires use of the Newcomen Hammer to make). To use, add a Full Bucket of Water and Basket of Charcoal, then light the fuel with a Firebrand. It can then be used for 20 seconds. A forge, and Wooden Tongs are NOT required to use the Newcomen bore.
- Use a Steel Piston Blank to get Steel Cylinder Blank
- Use a Steel Rod to get Steel Pipe
- Use a Steel Pipe to get Pump Valve Jacket
- Use a Pump Valve Jacket to get Wick Housing
Newcomen Lathe[ | ]
To get a Newcomen Lathe, add a Lathe Mechanism (This requires use of the Newcomen Hammer to make). To use, add a Full Bucket of Water and Basket of Charcoal, then light the fuel with a Firebrand. It can then be used for 20 seconds. A forge, and Wooden Tongs are NOT required to use the Newcomen lathe.
- Use a Steel Piston Blank to get Precision Piston
- Use a Precision Piston to get Steel Valve
- Use a Steel Rod to get Cam Shaft
- Use a Cam Shaft to get Crank Shaft
- Use a Steel Cylinder Blank to get Precision Cylinder
- Use a Steel Pipe to get Fuel Nozzle Body
- Use a Thin Steel Rod to get Drill Bit
Newcomen Drill[ | ]
To get a Newcomen Drill, add a Drill Mechanism (This requires use of the Newcomen Hammer, Roller and Lathe to make). To use, add a Full Bucket of Water and Basket of Charcoal, then light the fuel with a Firebrand. It can then be used for 20 seconds. A forge, and Wooden Tongs are NOT required to use the Newcomen Drill.
- Use a Steel Blade Blank to get Draw Plate
